Inverting the Observer's colours changes its character completely. Where the anthracite version reads as a night-flying instrument, this silver-white dial with black Arabic numerals belongs to the older tradition of marine and pocket chronometers, and the blued hands - which would be nearly invisible against a dark ground - become the most striking thing on the watch. The blue is a heat treatment rather than paint, so the colour shifts with the light and never looks flat. The layout is unchanged, because it was arrived at for functional reasons: small seconds at nine to show the watch is alive, up and down power reserve at three, Panorama Date at six, and a railroad minute track running around the edge of a 44mm steel case built for legibility above all else.
