The Portofino is IWC's dress watch, and the 40mm Automatic is the one that carries the collection — three hands, a date, and nothing else competing for the dial. Applied Roman numerals and slim leaf-shaped hands are the whole design; the restraint is deliberate, and it is what lets the watch sit under a cuff without announcing itself. On a silver-plated dial the numerals read as detail rather than decoration. Black alligator underneath keeps it formal. Named for the Italian fishing village that became a Riviera resort, which tells you exactly what it is dressed for.
