Black turns the Portofino from a light dress watch into something considerably more severe — the applied Roman numerals and leaf-shaped hands now read as silver against dark rather than the other way round, and the whole dial recedes. It is the version that works best in the evening. At 40mm in steel on black alligator it is as formal as IWC's catalogue gets without moving to precious metal.
