The Panerai Brand
Giovanni Panerai (1825–1897) founded Officine Panerai in Florence, Italy in 1860. Opening the shop not only provided the city with a store and workshop, but also provided the city’s first watchmaking school. By 1900, under the leadership of the founder’s grandson Guido Panerai (1873–1934), Panerai became an official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. Panerai supplied the Royal Italian Navy with high precision instruments for a number of years. In 1916, Officine Panerai created the Radiomir collection. This collection uses a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. The substance’s high visibility and the paint’s excellent underwater adhesive qualities immediately make the radium paste a key element in Officine Panerai’s production. After creating a prototype and executing the collection, Panerai implemented the functions of the prototype and made a number of changes to create a new collection. In 1938, Panerai started producing a new Radiomir model with several different features: the use of overlapping plates for the dial, the upper part having perforated indices and numerals so as to make the radium paint more readable and luminescent; the wire lugs made more resistant, and comprising a metal bar folded at both ends and welded to the case middle. Panerai has four major lines of watches, Historic, Contemporary, Manifattura and Special Editions. Most watches are produced in a limited run (normally of 500, 1000, 2000 or 4000 units) and carry an issue number on the case back. Panerai makes many watches as either limited or special editions. This is done intentionally to produce fewer watches than the market demands in order to maintain an image of exclusivity. Officine Panerai continued to keep up with the demands of the Italian Navy. By the 1990s, they started to move more towards the civilian market. Actor, Sylvester Stallone, found and bought a Panerai Luminor at a jeweler in Rome in 1995 to wear during the shooting of the film “Daylight”. Stallone ordered a small batch of these watches with his signature on the case back and gave some as gifts to his friends. These watches were known as Slytech, and Stallone’s purchase of these watches tremendously influenced the revival of the brand.
